Daniel Day-Lewis wins Golden Globe
Ireland-based actor Daniel Day-Lewis has won the best actor award at the 2008 Golden Globe Awards.
The award for ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama’ was won by Day-Lewis for his role in 'There Will Be Blood' (pictured above).
Irish actors who missed out on the Globes this year included Irish schoolgirl Saoirse Ronan who was up for best supporting actress for 'Atonement', Jonathan Rhys-Meyers for 'the Tudors' shown on TV3, and James Nesbitt in the BBC's 'Jekyll'.
Due to a writers strike currently being staged by the Writers Guild of America, the awards ceremony was cancelled this year and replaced with a press conference at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, LA County.
The Golden Globes have been organised since 1944 by the
Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a group of journalist which cover the US film industry for international media.
Jorge Camara, president the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, said: “We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007’s outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television,”
'There Will Be Blood' opens in Irish cinemas on February 29.
